How Larry Page’s Obsessions Became Google’s Business

Three years ago, Charles Chase, an engineer who manages Lockheed Martin’s nuclear fusion program, was sitting on a white leather couch at Google’s Solve for X conference when a man he had never met knelt down to talk to him.

They spent 20 minutes discussing how much time, money and technology separated humanity from a sustainable fusion reaction — that is, how to produce clean energy by mimicking the sun’s power — before Mr. Chase thought to ask the man his name.

“I’m Larry Page,” the man said. He realized he had been talking to Google’s billionaire co-founder and chief executive.

Why Bigger Is Better When It Comes To Big Data

There are lots of people out there, who like me, believe that the big data party needs to stop and corporations need to get serious about big data with a bigger focus on ROI. Big data projects need to be held up to the same governance and be measured by the same criteria as other IT projects.

Just to be clear, I’m not bashing the technologies behind big data (both established and brand new) – I think they’re amazing. These technologies have been built to tackle the unique challenges that big data poses and can help organisations get more out of their big data today than ever before.

10 Behaviors You Never See in Successful People

When you spend decades working with executives and business leaders, you really can’t help but observe what works and doesn’t work over the long haul. One thing I’ve noticed, it’s not intrinsic characteristics or personal habits that determine whether you’re successful or not. It’s your behavior.

What do I mean by “behavior?” How you react under long-term stress. Whether you meet your commitments or not. How you interact with others. Your attitude toward customers. How hard you’re willing to work to do the job right. Whether you’re focused and disciplined or scattered and distracted. That sort of thing.

Currently, the UberEATS service is available within Uber’s primary app, but only for those requesting a ride, and a meal. It’s also only available during lunchtime.

In March the service is set to go live in Los Angeles, Dallas, Seattle, Chicago, New York, Austin, Washington D.C., Houston, San Francisco and Atlanta.

Social Impact B Corporations are on the Rise

New legislation is allowing companies to put social and environmental impact on par with profits.

A little provision was sneaked into the Italian parliament's big end-of-year budget package: it will now be possible for Italian companies, new or already existing, to incorporate as "Società Benefit," or Benefit Corporations. These companies will be officially allowed to put societal benefit on a par with profits.

The Fallacy of “Modern” Management When It Comes to Innovation Management

We’re in an amazing time. The rate of technological change and adoption gives consumers more choice and power than ever before.

For the consumer, this is awesome.

For big business, it’s a threat that must be navigated successfully. Doing so means a new kind innovation management, because the management most of us learned in school won’t quite do the trick.

10 Tips For Getting Your Colleagues To Work With You Better

One of the most important hiring criteria for many companies is the ability to work as a team player—yet, so many of us have colleagues who don’t play well with others.

“If you have one bad apple in the bunch, it can really hurt the morale and enthusiasm of an entire department,” says Andy Teach, author of From Graduation to Corporation, and host of the YouTube channel FromGradToCorp. “A department, or company, that works well together, has the most success together. When you enjoy working with your colleagues and look forward to interacting with them, everyone benefits.”

Los monopatines flotadores, comúnmente conocidos como “hoverboards”, fueron uno de los productos tecnológicos de los que más se habló este año… pero casi por todas las razones equivocadas.1. La explosión de los ‘hoverboards’

Pitching Your Startup to the Media

At Chop Dawg over the past several years, we have had the great fortune to see our clients successfully featured on some of the top digital and print publications on the planet. It’s a truly humbling experience, and above all, it says a lot about the type of people we have the privilege to work with and the products that they have been able to visualize and create.

The New Age Economy

In the past years, the way we dress ourselves, the way we listen to music, the way we watch TV, the way we date, the day we transport… it all has changed a lot. And those changes didn’t happened by a matter of coincidence or just fate. Behind each of these new behaviors there is a strong, innovative and yet a little abstract background: the sharing economy.

How to deliver feedback without arguments

Feedback is one of the most essential skills in life. It is not realistic to expect that everything will always go as planned for you. If you want to correct the errors, or make sure that things improve, you must be able to deliver feedback effectively. When you deliver feedback you are usually commenting on somebody else’s performance. This requires a degree of emotional maturity and sensitivity to ensure that the recipient does not take it personal. After all, when you deliver feedback effectively, you are aiming to help both parties – you get the result that you are looking for and the other person gets some valuable information which helps them improve their performance in future. It really is a win-win situation; if you deliver feedback in the appropriate manner.

5 Productivity Tips I Learned From Uber and Other Silicon Valley Superstars

I once asked Mitch Kapor how he stayed productive. The tech veteran smiled and showed me an elaborate Microsoft Word document he used to keep track of all the people, places and projects in his life with keyboard shortcuts to move information around, so he’d know what to do when. Seeing him in action with it was a marvel, because for him, that document was clearly the best tool for the job.

If There Wasn’t a Way Before, It Doesn’t Mean There Never Will Be

"Quality questions create a quality life. Successful people ask better questions, & as a result, they get better answers." ~Tony Robbins

"To succeed, one must be creative and persistent." ~John H. Johnson

When we try to make improvements or implement a new process there will be times where we discover that there are certain obstacles that legitimately prohibit us from moving forward. In many instances that can mistakenly create a perpetual roadblock where we don’t reassess the obstacles in the future. Instead we say, “Well we tried that before and it won’t work.” But in this ever changing business environment that is often not the case. I am positive that there have been a number of changes in your organization, and there’s a good chance that some of those affect those obstacles you ran into before.

Richard Branson: How to start a business with no experience

Is it a requirement to have experience of the industry in which you’re setting up a business? Not at all, argues Richard Branson, just create something different…

"Think about changes you’d like to see as a customer – even if you’ve just noticed little details that need tweaking. Those little changes may add up to a big idea that leads to a new and truly disruptive product or service. This is essentially how we, at Virgin, launched our first successful businesses," explains the Virgin Group founder in a recent blog post.

"We were very sensible when we started out, setting up connected enterprises like most other companies do. We went from running a small record shop to starting up a record label with recording studios and then added our large music megastores to our portfolio".

4 Deadly Pitfalls All Start-ups Must Avoid

Starting a new business in any field is never likely to be a walk in the park. Whatever your specific goals are there will be any number of ways in which your pursuit of success could be scuppered.

But there are also some predictable problems that all start-up operators should be looking to avoid if at all possible.

Here’s a look at 4 such pitfalls well worth having in mind if you’re embarking on a start-up journey of your own.

1. Failing to properly prepare

Quite what amounts to “properly” preparing to start a business is always going to be a matter of opinion and individual judgement but the list of companies that fail because their founders didn’t do their homework is endless.

11 Things Ultra-Productive People Do Differently

When it comes to productivity, we all face the same challenge—there are only 24 hours in a day.

Yet some people seem to have twice the time; they have an uncanny ability to get things done. Even when juggling multiple projects, they reach their goals without fail.

Time is really the only capital that any human being has, and the only thing he can’t afford to lose." –Thomas Edison

We all want to get more out of life. There's arguably no better way to accomplish this than by finding ways to do more with the precious time you've been given.

It feels incredible when you leave the office after an ultra-productive day. It's a workplace high that's hard to beat.

With the right approach, you can make this happen every day.

Mark Suster Speech at NYU
